SCOPE

Issues on health care access have recently been put in sharp relief, as the current COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of strengthening health infrastructure and workforce around the world. There are many factors influencing access and utilisation of health services that need to be considered, including physical and virtual access, quality of services provided, and cost and affordability.

In this Call for Papers, PLOS ONE welcomes studies exploring these different aspects: from interventions targeted to improve accessibility, quality and equity, to economic evaluations of health policies and service management, to qualitative research exploring patients’ and providers’ perceptions and outcomes of service delivery, to epidemiological studies on service availability and population health outcomes in times of health stressors.

RESEARCH TOPICS

  • Advancements in the measurement of quality of care
  • Improving availability, quality, and equity of health services, including:
    • cost effectiveness analyses

    • new interventions

    • intersectoral approaches

  • Innovations in planning, optimal deployment and supportive supervision of health care workforce
  • Public and private health insurances and health care access
  • Strategies to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on routine or preventive health services
  • Approaches to strengthen accountability for the delivery of quality health services

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed long-standing disparities and inefficiencies in the provision of healthcare throughout the world. This Call for Papers will shed light on these issues and provide promising and effective solutions to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on our healthcare systems and, consequently, population health.
