SCOPE

Freshwater Ecosystems occupy a small percent of the Earth’s surface but they are rich sources of biodiversity and provide important services to human societies, such as water, food, regulation of hydrological extremes, pollutant attenuation, and carbon sequestration. As freshwater systems are under pressure from human activity and climate change, a more complete understanding of these systems is needed to respond to the environmental changes associated with these processes.

PLOS ONE is announcing a call for papers for a new Collection, Freshwater Ecosystems, to shed light on this important topic. This collection aims to transcend traditional boundaries between ecosystem types e.g. terrestrial, aquatic, marine and divisions among processes e.g. carbon, nutrients, hydrology, human activity, population ecology. Additionally, new approaches to scaling surface and subsurface processes and recovery timeframes of biogeochemical and ecological functioning are of great interest. We would particularly encourage submissions from regions and voices that are underrepresented in the freshwater ecosystem literature.”

RESEARCH TOPICS
We are at a crucial moment when the decisions we make about aquatic ecosystems will affect global biosphere integrity and human wellbeing. We need new approaches to science and policy that cut across disciplines and methodologies to shed light on how these dynamic environments work and how they respond to multiple socio ecological pressures.

I published with PLOS ONE because I love the idea that acceptance is based on quality of the work, not whether it's trendy or "important" in the eyes of a few editors. I also support PLOS ONE's Open Access policy, so people outside of academia can access it, and the journal's support of transparency in research (i.e. making the data available)
