Cancers figure among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths each year. It is expected that annual cancer cases will rise from 14 million in 2012 to 22 within the next 2 decades. Knowledge about the causes of cancer and interventions to prevent and manage the disease is extensive and is continually growing. Whilst many patients now have improved prognosis if their cancer is detected early and treated adequately, new research is being regularly published on preventing and curing cancer. This Collection highlights some of this research published in PLOS journals over the last few years.
