The complexity of the cardiovascular system has sparked increasing interest in characterizing the interplay between different components of the heart and blood vessels. In this collection of articles published across PLOS journals, Associate Editor Dario Ummarino highlights some of the latest research on the basic biology of the cardiovascular system, ranging from the dynamic tissue remodelling and electrophysiology of the heart to the chronic inflammatory mechanisms in the vasculature. The knowledge emerging from such varied fields provides fertile ground for innovative strategies in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
